Ilona graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta in 2012. Thereafter, she pursued her Master of Laws with specialisation in Banking and Finance with the University of London, Queen Mary and obtained her LL.M in 2013.

In 2013, she enrolled with the University of Birmingham whereby she is acquired a PhD in Law and worked in private practice at the Courts of Malta for two years after graduation.

She is currently employed at the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) whereby she mainly focuses on market abuse, but is also currently working on other legislations that need to come into force in Malta.
