This course is designed to prepare educators to effectively support children as Learning Support Educators (LSEs) within classroom and school settings. It builds on the foundational knowledge gained from the basic (Supply) LSE course, strengthening and expanding the key skills, knowledge, and competencies developed at the introductory level.

Learners will gain a solid theoretical foundation in human development, with a specific focus on child and adolescent growth. This understanding is applied within educational contexts to support diverse learning needs and promote inclusive practices.

Through this course, educators will:

  • Deepen their understanding of how children learn and develop.
  • Explore how to support learning within inclusive and diverse classrooms.
  • Gain an introductory overview of various learning difficulties and disabilities.
  • Learn practical strategies to assist students in overcoming educational barriers.

This qualification equips learners with the essential tools to create supportive, inclusive, and developmentally informed learning environments.

Mode of Assessment

Introduction to Child and Adolescent Development
This module introduces course participants to the area of human development with focus on the early stages of development. It will help participants get an understanding of the development aspect that effects behaviour and how behaviours change during development. There will also be a focus on characteristics of development and how human development depends on the interaction between genes and environment.

Introduction to Psychology of Learning
The psychology of learning focuses on a range of topics related to how people learn and interact with their environments. This study unit presents a brief overview of some of the major learning issues including behaviourism, classical and operant conditioning.

Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Skills
This module, part of which will be experiential, will take a close look at the issues that lead to sound intrapersonal skills, an asset towards developing a healthy personality. This will include topics like self-esteem, assertiveness and responsive behaviour, self-motivation, stress management, effective talking and listening skills, decision-making skills and change, and successful time-management.

Introduction to Literacy in the Classroom
This module covers the importance and different aspects of literacy, including the basics of oral and written language like phonics and syntax. It discusses challenges faced by children with learning difficulties and strategies to help them achieve their full potential. Participants will learn about barriers to literacy, specific difficulties like dyslexia, and methods for teaching literacy to children with various needs.

Introduction to Numeracy in the Classroom
This module provides students with sound understanding of basic numeracy principles and the significance of numeracy in everyday life. It also aims at helping learning support educators to understand the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach and how to integrate it in practice.

Addressing diversity and inclusion in the classroom
This module aims at equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to create an inclusive classroom environment that respects and embraces diversity.

Supporting Children with Learning Difficulties
This module allows the course participants to engage with specific learning difficulties. They will learn to develop alternative learning approaches and strategies to use with students facing particular difficulties so as to help children stay motivated and persevere.

Formulating and developing IEPs
This module will allow course participants the opportunity to interact and develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP). They will appreciate the central role that LSEs play in its development and implementation. The IEP is a legally binding document that outlines the learning plan for a student facing specific learning difficulties who requires specialised instruction and related services. It is developed by a team of educators, specialists, and the student's parents or guardians.

Introduction to Safeguarding Children
This module aims at providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure the safety and well-being of students with particular attention on how to safeguard and protect children as well as responding to evidence or concerns vis-à-vis child abuse.

Practicum Placement in Class
The Practicum Placement provides aspiring learning support educators looking to develop further with hands-on experience in a classroom setting. Participants will work under the tutorship of experienced professionals to support students with diverse learning needs.

Colloquium
This unit brings to a close the 30 ECTS course. It serves as an opportunity to foster a sense of community amongst the course participants by engaging in dialogue and discussions. The Colloqium serves as an opportunity for course participants to identify a number of critical issues for further elaboration through debate sessions.

The below are the requested entry requirements

Students must hold the following qualification to be eligible for this programme:

Award in the Practice of Inclusive Education in the Classroom
(Programme for the Occupation of a Support Learning Support Educator [SLSE] – commonly referred to as the 10-week programme)

In addition, all applicants are required to possess basic computer literacy skills. A portion of the training will be conducted online, and course materials, as well as assessments, will be accessed and submitted via the designated Learning Management System (LMS).
