The Award in Accountancy Law covers various laws and regulations which directly and indirectly impact the field of accountancy and finance. These laws and regulations include employment law and the legal framework relating to the establishment and operation of a business.

This certification enables learners to acquire the necessary skills, competencies and autonomy to identify different aspects and sources of the legal system related to accountancy and finance. Learners will also learn to monitor laws governing the formation and constitution of organisations, including financing types and insolvency laws, and how to recognise fraudulent or criminal corporate behaviour in organisations. Learners will learn how to:

  • Understand and critically reflect on the key elements of the legal system and the main sources of law
  • Define and analyse the legal obligations of formulating a contract, including understanding the content of a contract and dealing with breaches and potential negligence
  • Recognise and compare share capital, loan capital, capital maintenance and other types of capital
  • Understand and assess the elements underpinning the formation, administration and management of companies
  • Understand and critically reflect on the elements of criminal and fraudulent behaviour in organisations
  • Distinguish between the elements of a legal system and sources of law which are relevant to accountancy and finance and explain the roles of the court structure
  • Apply the different components of the law of obligations to business, namely the formation of a contract, any breaches and remedies, the law of tort and professional negligence
  • Differentiate between the various aspects of a self-employment and employment relationship under employment law
  • Apply knowledge of dismissal and redundancy to real-life business scenarios, including the various remedies at law
  • Explain the steps necessary for the formation and constitution of business organisations, including partnerships and companies
  • Examine the impacts of various capital financing sources, insolvency law and corporate recovery on business organisations
  • Identify and apply the components of corporate fraudulent and criminal behaviour in business organisations

Mode of Assessment

The Award in Accountancy Law will be assessed through the use of an exam, an individual project and a reflective journal.

Entry Requirements

The below are the requested entry requirements

To be eligible for the programme, candidates must hold any one of the following requirements:

  • MQF Level 4 qualification in accountancy, finance or a relevant field
  • Matriculation certificate with passes in at least 2 A-levels and 3 Intermediates
  • Matsec certificate with 4 passes at Grade 5 or better in accounts, english, mathematics and any other subject
  • Relevant work experience in a relevant field

Non-native English speakers must also have an English qualification such as CEFR or IELTS 5.5.
